LIES A CALM ALONG THE DEEP
A multi-media visual song exploring personal connection to the seascape as a place of solace and solitude: a place of calm and escape from the everyday noise of life; to reconnect to the ‘out there’ beyond the confines of the physical body. In the vast, the metaphorical barriers we construct between ourselves and the landscape, and the artificial frames through which we view it as an object, dissolve.
The performative act of immersion unlocks a liminal space where internal perception and external experience, and the past, present and future, co-exist – where “the inside and outside are more intertwined than the usual distinctions allow” (Solnit 2017: 119): where “the lines that are drawn for and by us – between here and there, between now and then – [are] washed away (Dochartaigh 2021: xiii).
The series challenges the self-centred perspective of humans and our human-centric concept of time, acknowledging that the vast continues regardless of our interaction or gaze and will continue long after we ourselves have returned to the vast.
